Pre Medical Curriculum
MD Program for 51/2 years
SEMESTER - I
Biology I: Introduces the fundamental concepts in biology which includes cell structures & functions, metabolism, molecular & organism genetics and animal development & function. It aims to explain the role of macromolecules in the organization of cells, the compartmentalization of metabolic reactions and the role of the cell cycle with regard to inheritance.
General Chemistry I: Introduces the fundamental concepts of general chemistry which includes atomic theory, chemical composition, thermo-chemistry, gases, bonding, solids, liquids and solutions.
Pre Calculus: An introductory topic that reviews the basic properties of logarithms and exponents. The experimental function and derivatives for simple functions are also introduced.
English Composition I: Provides a systematic and practical introduction to the techniques of effective college level English skills. A review of grammar and syntax is included which will help students build the necessary skills to write papers effectively.
SEMESTER - II
Biology II: Covers concepts in biological sciences, including physiology and environmental pollution.
Chemistry II: Offers further study of important concepts, theories and laws in inorganic and organic chemistry that provide an understanding of physical and biological processes. The course explains the chemical kinetics, chemical equilibrium, acid-base reaction, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, metallurgy, non-metals, nuclear chemistry, transition elements and organic chemistry.
Calculus: The 2nd semester places emphasis on application. It covers optimization of functions with two or more variables, various integration techniques and differential equations.
English Composition II: Addresses the various means of improving effective communication through critical thinking, careful writing and vocabulary expansion. Improving the student's reading rate and comprehension is the ultimate goal.
SEMESTER - III
General Physics I: Introduces fundamental concepts of physics, including mechanics, properties of matter, thermodynamics, heat and wave motion. This topic is designed for students to understand the basic principles of mechanics, heat and sound. It is aimed specifically towards the medical science.
General Psychology: An introductory class that explores the science of behavior, focusing on the individual as an adapting biological system. Topics covered include methodology, physiology and perception.
Organic Chemistry I: Introduces the structure, nomenclature, properties & reactions of carbon compounds, hydrocarbons, nonfunctional & poly functional compounds, with an emphasis on structure. An advanced course in structure and reactivity of functional groups (aromatic compounds, carbonyl compounds, carbohydrates, organo-metallic compounds, carboxylic acids & their derivatives, amines and amino acids). This course covers all the essentials needed for biochemistry.
Ethics: Examines a selection of moral issues in contemporary society. Topics include biomedical ethics, environmental quality, philosophical foundations and sexuality.
SEMESTER - IV
Introduction to Cell Biology and Histology: Focuses on understanding microanatomy of the human body. It emphasizes the characteristics of the basic tissue types that form organ systems and how they function.
Medical Terminology: Offers an introduction to medical terms through an analysis of their construction (prefix, suffix, roots, abbreviations etc.) and their appropriate medical usage.
Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology: Focuses on the structure and function of the body's various systems. Additionally, functional disease pathologies, biochemical systems and anatomical kinetics are taught.
General Physics II: This subject is an introduction to basic principles of electricity, magnetism, electromagnetism, alternating current, electric fields and optics. This course does not require the mastery of calculus.
Organic Chemistry II: Continues the study of the subject, providing an introduction to lipids, carbohydrates, proteins, nucleic acids, and spectroscopy as they relate to clinical medicine.
Students who complete the Pre-Medical program successfully will be promoted to the 1st year of the 4 year MD program, consequently completing their medical school curriculum.
